you have a choice
to live in reaction to the world
or responsibility to yourself.

will you listen to the whispers
that tell you to slow down
go in,
turn off the noise

or will you continue
to react, distract
listen in on the party line
to things you were never meant to hear?

i remember being twelve
spinning the rotary phone dialing disc
whatever digits we pleased
til the phone rang
and we said something silly
to the voice on the other end.

this was after the party line days,
i only heard stories about those
of neighbors all hopping on the line
catching snippets for gossip.

we were kids in the 90s.

walkie talkies with a 2 mile radius,
freedom.

before cellphones
and pocket computers
commandeered brain waves
we played,

in the fields and forest
crossing under the road
by way of a small creek
dashing thru the dark, loud
metal culvert.

we were kids in the 90s
and early 2000s.

I remember the entire world
was going to crash,

cash registers will malfunction!
banking will collapse!
stoplights won’t work anymore!
because computers are programmed
on only the last two digits of the year.

going back to zero zero
will we enter the new millennium
or will it all go dark?

we have a choice
in how we move thru the world
fear and separation is common
and it’s not the only way
fighting for justice, yearning for peace
being the martyr for every cause,
person, place and condition.
you know this,
you can change.

read between the lines,
forget the narratives
and begin to write your own story.
